南禅寺は、京都市左京区にある臨済宗南禅寺派の大本山。日本最初の勅願禅寺で、京都五山（天龍寺、相国寺、建仁寺、東福寺、万寿寺）および鎌倉五山（建長寺、円覚寺、寿福寺、浄智寺、浄妙寺）の上に置かれる別格扱いの寺で、日本の全ての禅寺の中で最も高い格式を持っています。
南禅寺は、弘安十年（1287年）に亀山上皇が持仏堂を建立し「南禅院」と名付けました。これが南禅寺の始まりであります。後に持仏堂の南禅院は南禅寺の塔頭・南禅院となっています。
建武元年（1334年）、後醍醐天皇は南禅寺を五山の第一としましたが、至徳三年（1385年）に足利義満は自らの建立した相国寺を五山の第一とするために南禅寺を「別格」として「五山の上」に位置づけて、更に五山を京都五山と鎌倉五山に分割しています。

Nanzenji Temple is the head temple of the Nanzenji sect of the Rinzai sect, located in Sakyo-ku, Kyoto. It is the first imperial Zen temple in Japan, and is treated as a separate temple above the Kyoto Gozan and Kamakura Gozan, and has the highest prestige among all Zen temples in Japan.
In 1287, Emperor Kameyama built a Mochibutsudo and named it “Nanzen-in”. This was the beginning of Nanzen-ji temple. Later, Nanzen-in of Mochibutsudo became Nanzen-in, the sub-temple of Nanzen-ji.
In 1334, Emperor Go-Daigo made Nanzenji the first of the Five Temples, but in 1385, Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, in order to make Shokokuji, which he had built, the first of the Five Temples, placed Nanzenji “above” the Five Temples as a “separate” temple, and further divided the Five Temples into the Five Temples of Kyoto and the Five Temples of Kamakura.

雪化粧をした南禅寺、とても美しいです。普段なら見過ごしてしまう雪解けの雨垂れさえも、美しい画になるのだなぁと、感心してしまいました。
