建仁寺は、京都市東山区にある臨済宗建仁寺派大本山の寺院。開基は源頼家、開山は栄西。
建仁2年（1202年）将軍源頼家が土地を寄進し栄西を開山として臨済宗の拠点として建立されました。
境内の伽藍は宋の百丈山に擬して造営されています。
創建時は、天台・密教・禅の三宗兼学の道場として栄えました｡
室町時代には、幕府により京都五山が制定され、その第三位として厚い保護を受けていました｡
明治に入ると臨済宗建仁寺派としての分派独立、建仁寺はその大本山となります。
豊臣秀吉を祀る高台寺や、「八坂の塔」のある法観寺は建仁寺の末寺となります。
地元京都では「けんねんさん」の名で親しまれ今日に至っています。

Kennin-ji Temple is the head temple of the Kennin-ji branch of the Rinzai sect located in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City. Founded by Eisai.
In 1202, the shogun Minamoto no Yoriie donated land and established Eisai as the foundation of the Rinzai sect.
The temple was built in the style of the Sung Dynasty’s Hyakjōzan.
When it was built, it prospered as a training hall for the three schools of Tendai, Esoteric Buddhism, and Zen.
During the Muromachi period, the shogunate established the Kyoto Gozan (Five Temples), and as the third of them, it was heavily protected.
During the Muromachi period (1336-1573), the shogunate established the Kyoto Gozan (Five Temples), and the temple received extensive protection as the third-ranked temple of the five temples in Kyoto.
In the Meiji period, the temple became an independent branch of the Kenninji School of the Rinzai sect, and Kenninji became its main temple.
Kodai-ji temple, which enshrines Toyotomi Hideyoshi, and Hokan-ji temple, which houses Yasaka Pagoda, are also Kennin-ji’s branch temples.
The temple is known locally in Kyoto as “Kennen-san” (literally, “the temple of Kennen”).
