Kushihiki Hachimangu Shrine is located in Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture. Five of the shrine buildings, including the main hall, are designated as Important Cultural Properties, and the shrine is lined with old cedars over 100 years old. During the Edo period (1603-1868), this area was the Hachinohe domain, but Kushibiki Hachimangu Shrine was under the control of the Morioka domain as its enclave, and the Morioka Nanbu family continued to revere the shrine with great devotion, making it a Morioka shrine until the Meiji period.
Kushibiki Hachimangu Shrine originated from Hachimangu Shrine, which enshrined Hachimanjin in Koshu Nanbusho (present-day Nanbucho, Yamanashi Pref). Nambu Mitsuyuki (founder of the Nanbu clan), who was successful in the Battle of Oshu, claimed this area as his fiefdom and entered the area in 1191. Nambu Mitsuyuki moved the Hachimangu Shrine from Nanbu Sho to Rokunohe, and moved it to its current location in 1222.
At that time, the Hachimangu shrine founded by Sakanoue Tamuramaro enshrined in Kushihiki village, and it is said that the shrine was enshrined together with it.
Since then, it has been revered as ‘Kushihiki Hachimangu Shrine’ as the main guardian deity of the Nanbu clan and also called ‘Nanbu Ichinomiya’.
In the precincts, valuable buildings and decorations remain, including the main hall, which is a valuable relic that conveys the form of the shrine from the early Edo period. The Hachinohe Elementary School auditorium, which was used as the Emperor Meiji’s pilgrimage post in Tohoku, has been moved to the precincts of the shrine as the “Meiji Memorial Hall,” and is the oldest surviving Western-style building in Aomori.
