1993年に復元された慶長遣欧使節船「サン・ファン・バウティスタ号」の解体が宮城県石巻市で2022年1月から始まりました。作業は、3月下旬に終える見通しということです。
「サン・ファン・バウティスタ号」は、伊達政宗がスペインの宣教師ルイス・ソテロや家臣の支倉常長を使節としてスペインおよびローマへ派遣した際に、太平洋を横断した帆船でした。「20世紀最後で最大」の木造船の建造を担ったのは、少なくなった船大工たち。震災や台風による損害と老朽化により解体が決まりしたが、その運営の在り方など問題が残る気がします。残念なことに歴史好きな方の間でも、この船の存在を知る人は意外に少ないようです。この美しい船がこのまま、人知れず解体されることは忍び難く残念でなりません。幸い、解体の前に「サン・ファン・バウティスタ号」を撮影しており、在りし日の姿をここに残しておきたいと思います。
サン・ファン・バウティスタ号は、江戸時代初期に仙台藩で建造されたガレオン船です。1993年に宮城県石巻市にて復元され、石巻漁港に仮係留され竣工式が行われました。船の建造には船大工800人、鍛冶700人、雑役3,000人が関わり、45日を要しまた。竣工後は、1996年に石巻市に開館した「宮城県慶長使節船ミュージアム」に係留・展示されています。
この船に乗り慶長遣欧使節がメキシコのアカプルコを目指し日本を出航したのは1613年10月。船の乗員は支倉常長ら180名余り、他に幕府関係者10名、南蛮人40名が乗船していたと云います。3ヶ月後に、メキシコのアカプルコに到着。支倉達は陸路で大西洋側に移動し別船にてヨーロッパへ向かいました。船は、1615年4月（慶長20年4月）に、スペイン国王使節として、船は3ヶ月半の航海で浦賀に帰還しました。
1616年9月、サン・ファン・バウティスタ号は再びアカプルコを目指し浦賀を出航します。ヨーロッパから戻った支倉達を乗せた船は、1618年4月にアカプルコを出航。一行は1618年8月にマニラに到着しますが、船はスペインに半ば強制的に買収されることとなります。サン・ファン・バウティスタ号のその後は不明であり、スペイン戦艦となったなど複数の説が存在しています。
使節団は約2年のマニラ滞在後、別の船で長崎へ到着。1620年9月、7年振りに仙台へ帰国しました。帰還した時、国内情勢は出発前とは大きく変化しており、使節の目的だった貿易協定も実現は叶いませんでした。支倉常長は帰国後まもなく病死し、ソテロは日本に密入国したために処刑され殉教することとなります。
宮城県慶長使節船ミュージアム「サン・ファン館」（石巻市）では、
解体後は、サン・ファン・バウティスタ号の後継として４分の１サイズの繊維強化プラスチック（FRP）製の船を造る予定と発表されましたが、この船の魅力を越えることは難しく、残念ながら再び歴史ファンを呼び戻すことは困難な気がします。

The dismantling of the San Juan Bautista, a ship restored in 1993, began in January 2021. The work is expected to be finished in late March. The San Juan Bautista was a sailing ship that crossed the Pacific Ocean when Date Masamune dispatched the Spanish missionary Luis Sotelo and his vassal Tsunenaga Shikura as envoys to Spain and Rome. The “last and largest” wooden ship of the 20th century was built by a dwindling number of ship carpenters. The ship will be dismantled due to old age, but there are still some problems, such as how it should be managed. Surprisingly few people, even among history buffs, know about the existence of this ship. It is hard to bear the thought of this ship being dismantled without anyone knowing about it. Fortunately, I was filming the “San Juan Bautista” before the dismantling, and I would like to keep the appearance of the past day here.
The San Juan Bautista was a galleon built by the Sendai clan in the early Edo period. In 1993, she was restored in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, and temporarily moored at Ishinomaki Fishing Port, where the completion ceremony was held. It is said that 800 carpenters, 700 smiths, and 3,000 miscellaneous workers were involved in the construction of the ship, which took 45 days. After the ship was completed, it was berthed and displayed at the Miyagi Prefecture Miyagi Prefecture Keicho Mission Ship Museum , which opened in Ishinomaki City in 1996.
It was October 1613 when the Keicho Mission left Japan for Acapulco, Mexico on this ship. The ship’s crew consisted of more than 180 people, including Tsunenaga Sasakura, 10 Shogunate officials, and 40 European people. 3 months later, the ship arrived in Acapulco. Sasakura and his crew traveled overland to the Atlantic side and headed for Europe on another ship. In April 1615, the ship returned to Uraga on a three-and-a-half-month voyage as an envoy of the King of Spain.
In September 1616, the San Juan Bautista again sailed from Uraga for Acapulco. After returning from Europe, the ship carrying Shikura and his crew sailed from Acapulco in April 1618.
The group arrived in Manila in August 1618, but the ship was forcibly acquired by Spain. It is unknown after the San Juan Bautista, and there are multiple theories such as becoming a Spanish battleship.
After staying in Manila for about 2 years, the delegation arrived in Nagasaki by another ship. In September 1620, They returned to Sendai for the first time in 7 years. When they returned, the situation in Japan had changed drastically from before their departure, and the trade agreement that was the mission’s goal was not realized.
Tsunenaga Shikura died of illness shortly after returning to Japan, and Sotelo was executed and martyred for smuggling into Japan.
The beautiful figure of the dismantled galleon San Juan Bautista will be preserved here.
